Brick house facade with ivy and two chimneys

Chimney sweep and repair in Atlanta and Buckhead

From Buckhead's large brick homes to the bungalows of Virginia-Highland and Kirkwood, Atlanta has some of the oldest and most varied chimneys in the metro. We sweep, inspect and repair them across the city, with photos and a written report for every inspection.

Local know-how

What we see on chimneys in this area

Intown Atlanta has a little of everything: early twentieth-century bungalows and craftsman homes with original clay-tile flues, mid-century ranches, and the larger Buckhead homes where one chimney can serve two or three fireplaces. Older chimneys here often show the same problems: worn mortar joints, cracked crowns and flue tiles that have shifted over the decades.

Many intown homes are bought and sold with original fireplaces that have not been used in years. If you are buying or selling, a Level 2 inspection with a camera scan of each flue tells you exactly what you are getting before closing.

Big trees are part of what makes these neighborhoods special, but they also drop leaves and twigs straight into open flues. A properly fitted chimney cap keeps that debris, and the squirrels that follow it, out of the chimney.

FAQs

Chimney questions from Atlanta & Buckhead homeowners

Which Atlanta neighborhoods do you serve?

We work across Buckhead and intown Atlanta, including Garden Hills, Peachtree Hills, Ansley Park, Midtown, Morningside, Virginia-Highland, Inman Park, Grant Park and Kirkwood.

My intown bungalow has its original clay-tile flue. Is it safe to use?

It might be, but you cannot tell from inside the house. Clay tiles in older Atlanta chimneys often crack or shift over the decades. A Level 2 inspection with a camera scan of the flue shows whether the liner is intact before you light a fire.

One chimney serves several fireplaces in my Buckhead home. Does each one need checking?

Yes. Each fireplace usually has its own flue inside the chimney, and each flue needs to be swept and inspected separately. Your report covers every flue, so you know the condition of each fireplace.

The fireplace has not been used in years. What should I do before lighting it?

Have it inspected first. Unused flues in older Atlanta homes often hold nests, leaves or debris, and the liner may have deteriorated. A Level 2 inspection with a camera scan tells you whether it is clear and safe to use.

I am buying or selling a home in Atlanta. Do you do inspections for real estate?

Yes. A general home inspection does not look inside the flue. Our Level 2 inspection does, and you get a photo-documented written report on the spot, so it is ready to share with your agent before closing.

Leaves and squirrels keep getting into my chimney. What can I do?

Fit a properly sized chimney cap. Atlanta's big trees drop leaves and twigs straight into open flues, and animals follow. A cap with mesh sides keeps debris and animals out while letting smoke escape.

Can you repair the mortar on an older brick chimney?

Yes. We tuckpoint worn joints on older Atlanta chimneys using a mortar suited to the original brick. Softer, older brick needs a compatible mortar, because a mortar that is too hard can damage the brick around it.

Why does my fireplace smell in summer?

Atlanta's humidity reacts with creosote deposits in the flue and creates that smoky smell, especially when air is drawn down the chimney. A sweep removes the deposits, and a top-sealing damper or a cap can help keep humid air out.

Can you work on a chimney in one of Atlanta's historic districts?

Yes. Some intown neighborhoods, such as Inman Park, are designated historic districts, and some exterior changes there may need review by the City of Atlanta's Urban Design Commission. It is worth checking with the city before major exterior work. We document the chimney with photos, which helps with any application.
