Chimney inspections in Atlanta, GA: Level 1, 2 and 3

NFPA 211 Level 1, 2 and 3 chimney inspections, with a camera scan from Level 2 up and a photo-documented written report.

An inspection tells you whether your chimney is safe to use and what, if anything, needs attention. We follow the three inspection levels in NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys, fireplaces and vents, and recommend the level your situation calls for.

Level 1

The yearly check for a chimney that is in regular use and has not changed. We examine the readily accessible parts of the chimney, firebox, damper, flue and exterior, and confirm there are no blockages or combustible deposits.

Level 2

Everything in a Level 1, plus a camera scan of the full length of the flue and checks of accessible attic, crawl space and basement areas. NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 when a home is sold, after a chimney fire or storm, or when you change the appliance, fuel or flue.

Level 3

For when a serious hidden problem is suspected and a Level 2 cannot reach it. It involves removing parts of the chimney or the structure around it so the concealed areas can be checked. We explain why it is needed and what is involved before anything is opened up.

Buying or selling a home?

A general home inspection does not look inside the flue. A Level 2 does, and it gives you a clear record of the chimney’s condition to share with your agent before closing.

Your report

Every inspection comes with photos and a written report in plain English, with what we recommend and why, and you get it before we leave.

FAQ

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (678) 923-3593 and ask.

Do I need a Level 1 or a Level 2 inspection?

If you use your fireplace regularly and nothing has changed, a Level 1 is usually enough. If you are buying or selling the home, have had a chimney fire or storm damage, or are changing your appliance or fuel, NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2.

When is a Level 3 inspection needed?

Only when a serious hidden problem is suspected, such as damage after a chimney fire or structural movement, and the cause cannot be reached with a camera. We explain why before recommending one.

Is a chimney inspection part of a normal home inspection?

Not in any depth. A general home inspector typically looks at what is visible from the outside and in the firebox. A Level 2 chimney inspection adds a camera scan of the full flue.
