Weathered red brick wall with grey mortar joints

Chimney sweep and repair in Decatur, GA

Decatur's bungalows and older brick homes have some of the most characterful chimneys in the metro, and some of the most worn. We sweep, inspect and repair them with care, and photograph everything we find.

Local know-how

What we see on chimneys in this area

Neighborhoods like Oakhurst, Winnona Park and the streets around downtown Decatur are full of early twentieth-century homes. Their chimneys often have original clay-tile liners, soft old mortar and crowns that were never built to shed water properly.

A lot of these fireplaces were closed up decades ago and reopened by new owners. Before you use one, a Level 2 inspection with a camera scan of the flue will show whether the liner is intact and safe to burn in.

When repairs are needed, we handle tuckpointing, crown rebuilds, flashing and relining ourselves, so you are not passed between contractors.

FAQs

Chimney questions from Decatur homeowners

Which Decatur neighborhoods do you serve?

We work across Decatur, including Downtown Decatur, Oakhurst, Winnona Park, Clairemont, Great Lakes and Glennwood Estates.

Our Decatur fireplace was closed up decades ago. Can we use it again?

Often, yes, but have it inspected first. A Level 2 inspection with a camera scan shows whether the flue liner is intact, whether anything is blocking it and what, if anything, needs repair before you burn in it.

What if my original clay-tile liner is cracked?

A cracked liner should not be used, because heat and gases can reach the brick and the house framing. The usual fix is a new liner sized to the fireplace or appliance. We will show you photos of the damage and explain your options with a written quote.

My chimney's mortar is crumbling. Can you match it?

Yes. Older Decatur chimneys usually have soft mortar, and repairs should use a compatible mortar that will not damage the old brick. We match the color and joint style as closely as we can.

My chimney crown is cracked. Do I need a new one?

Many older crowns were never built to shed water properly. Small cracks can sometimes be sealed, but a crown that is badly cracked or poorly shaped usually needs rebuilding. We will tell you which applies after we inspect it.

Water comes in around my chimney when it rains hard. What causes it?

The usual causes are worn flashing where the chimney meets the roof, a cracked crown, a missing cap or porous brick. We find the actual source first, then fix it. Sealing the brick alone rarely solves a leak.

My bungalow fireplace looks small and shallow. Can I burn wood in it?

Some early twentieth-century fireplaces were built for coal, with shallow fireboxes that may not draw well with wood. An inspection tells you whether yours is suitable for wood and what, if anything, would make it safer.

I am buying a house in Decatur. Should I get the chimney inspected?

Yes. A Level 2 inspection is what NFPA 211 calls for at the sale of a home. You get a camera scan of the flue and a photo-documented report on the spot to share with your agent before closing.

Will I see what you find?

Yes. We photograph everything we find and go through it with you before we leave, so you understand any work we recommend before you decide.
